MATE will also use a bit less RAM and CPU than Cinnamon. I like Cinnamon the best, but on an old and not-so-powerful laptop I have, I use XFCE, which is the least resource-demanding version of the bunch. You could download the .iso of both Cinnamon and MATE, burn them to DVDs or USB sticks, and boot into the "live" session to try them both out. Or you could install VirtualBox on your computer and install both of them in VirtualBox to try them out.
